Tools To Calm Your Anxious Thoughts

1-2-3…Breathe.

I know that it seems like your anxiety has a mind of its own. Well, it does- sort of. I like to think of anxiety as more than how you’re thinking. Actually, I believe it’s a way of being. There’s a difference in being concerned about something versus being overly worried, which is all consuming. Consuming your time, your thoughts, and your life.

My mom used to tell me in my younger years, think about what you’re thinking about. And that’s where I want you to start. And did you know, the Bible has so many things to say about our thinking? Philippians 4:8, And now dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Romans 12:2, Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing, and perfect will. You see, when you transform your mind, everything connected to it can’t help but change.

If you want to change your anxious state of being and renew your mind, here’s a good place to start: Become aware (Write down what’s bringing you anxiety. Writing helps take the focus off and bring the calm down. It’s redirecting the anxiety you feel. Reframe your thinking (cancel the absolutes and bring on the options). Options provide…options. We’re looking for ways to minimize your one way of thinking and maximize the possibilities. Remember that list you made? At this time, you’re a bit calmer to explore those options. Write down the possibilities next to your absolutes.

Finally, pay attention to what’s going on with your body. How did your body respond before and after. It’s true, the body keeps the score. And it’s also a fact that you can retrain the body to respond in the right way. It starts with thinking about what you’re thinking about - but it doesn’t end there.
